"IT IS WHAT IT IS"
VIC CHESNUTT

I am a monster
Like Quasimodo
Or Caliban the natural man
Giving wild ripostes to my reflection
One ugly morning
In a rage
Father threw an apple
Into my carapace
And like the invisible man
Directing traffic
I'd be ineffective
No matter how enthusiastic
Amid the masses' frenzy
Participation
In this massive
Separation
Appearance is everything
Nothing is how it seems
And civilized society
Is calm civility
I'm the phantom of the opera
Singing beauty and at ease
Or Henry Darger's
Autobiography
And that is curt clues to my essence
Planned obsolescence
Appearance is everything
Nothing is how it seems
In a market economy
It's called marketing
And not exactly clawing my way to glory
Nor whimpering in the wind
But once positively
I'm teetering on the brink
Of an all out breakthrough
But sometimes clear headed
Sometimes a doofus
Sometimes very cordial
And sometimes aloof
I am syrupy optimistic one moment
Then gravely pessimistic the next
Irritable as a hornet sometimes
Then agreeable as it gets
I'm not a pagan
I don't worship anything
Not gods that don't exist
Nor the sun which is oblivious
I love my ancestors but not ritually
I don't blame them or praise them
For anything that they passed along to me
I don't need stone altars to help me hedge my bet
Against the looming blackness
It is what it is

"DEEPER CURRENTS"
VIC CHESNUTT

"ACTION FIGURE"
LAMBCHOP

I heard a rumor that I'm sad
Or at least that I feel bad
Whoever said that doesn't know
I'm pretty sure that I don't know
And if a case was made for this
Could it be something that we missed
Let's let the cat out of the bag
Let's let the neighborhood go bad
It take some time but there you go
It takes a lot of guts to show
The silly side of who we are
As if we'd ever go that far
So we can put the watch away
And we can throw away the cane
And we can walk through God's own will
Because he's crying, crying still today
What are the odds that you are right?
What will we have to eat tonight?
What if I told you it's okay
To be my action figure?
I've swatted bugs all afternoon
I've swallowed beer like a cartoon
And if old Waylon hung the moon
Will we be singing with him soon?
And I will learn to look away
When there are thing I cannot bear
Perhaps you'll sing a different tune
Perhaps we'll learn to tell the difference
And there are people that I know
Who learn to live within their limits
And we are lucky to be so
Completely interactive

"SHORT"
LAMBCHOP

Here? s a little story? bout regret
Doesn? t have an ending, it? s not finished yet
But from what I know this far it? s just a peep at who
we are
And an incomplete sentence that you said
Now it? s time to terminate our trust
Even though to you and me it doesn? t matter much
We can close our eyes and picture better days ahead
Even now the phone begins to ring
And our life hangs on a string
And today we start to learn just what that means
And somehow we? re faced with the fact
That you won? t ever get this back
This story? s short just like I said
Can? t seem to get it through my thick head
Started out with hope and now the ending is
suppressed
Smothered like a fire in your dreams
Or will we burn for you tomorrow in your dreams
Or will we pass out in the airport like a freak upon
your seat
Some freak upon your seat
"THE RISE AND FALL OF THE LETTER P"
LAMBCHOP

Well it started out intimate enough
She was hardly convinced of this
And nothing was right with out it
And every thing, I mean everything's unclean
How long is the right to suffer
And nothing impresses me
You are scared of all the couples and the mothers
Who disrespect your orders of the day
And I can't stand up
And I can't give back
It's just that it seems impossible
To understand a man like me
And I promise I won't live without you
And I promise I won't be that mean
These stupid promises are accumulating
In a grossly unwholesome scene
Now I'm happy to have lived without it
Pretty easy, if you know what I mean
I will stand upon a windswept hillside
Latter to recount how much this meant to me
Because this is the rise and fall of the letter P
"FLIRTED WITH YOU ALL MY LIFE"
VIC CHESNUTT

I am a man. I am self aware.
Everywhere I go, you're always right there with me.
I flirted with you all my life
Even kissed you once or twice
To this day I swear it was nice.
But clearly, I was not ready.
When you touched a friend of mine, I thought I would loose my mind.
But I found out with time,
That really, i was not ready.
No, No
Oh death, oh death, oh death.
Really, I'm not ready.
Of death you hinder me.
Death makes those dear to me.
Tease me with your sweet relief.
You're cool, and you are constant.
When my mom was cancer sick,
She fought but then succumb to it.
But you made her beg for it,
Lord Jesus, please, I'm ready.
Oh death, oh death, oh death.
Really I'm not ready.
No no.
Oh death, oh death, oh death.
Clearly I'm not ready.
HET LEVEN GAAT DOOR...
