"WATER"

KEVIN MORBY

 My body was sleeping
While my poor mind was dreaming
When they woke me up I didn't know that I'd been screaming
And my old heart was pounding, for the devil had found me
Trapped me in a corner of my mind
And my legs were both shaking
From the pain they'd been taking
Picked my body up, and aimed for home
But these boots have seen better
Can't make sense of this weather
Rolling over me, up in the sky
But I was warm like a fire
For I was full of desire to hold on, to not let go
Thought of friends, thought of family
And all who surround me
Those enemies I danced with, so long ago
Let them know

If you find water, please call my name
Put me out like a fire, cover me in rain

Thought of stars and the planets
Wondered how they could have planned this
And what were they thinking
How could they have known?
I felt small but full of pride
I felt tall for my size
My eyes were black and fixed on the night
And your name just hung
From a song I had sung
There in the air
Suspended by beauty
There are words that get spoken
Oh, and lives the leave broken
Some stone breaks in half
And some stones shatters
But my speech had been fleeting
Like the company I'd been keeping
I never asked for their names and they never asked for mine
Just a polluted highway
Or a clouded skyway
I'm a mess I confess, now send me the maid

If you find water, please call my name
Put me on like a fire, cover me in rain

Thought of stages with their singers
Oh, and painters with their fingers
I was strong like a horse in carrying my song
To drop it off in some stable
When I was young I was able
To never turn around, to never look behind
To grow old, to grow distant
Like a mare in the distance
Bothering no one, so let her live
Until she dies
Picture lilies, picture willows
And a wild open window
To a room with a view, and both of us laughing
Just children so young
Oh, at least in the scheme
With our hair still there
And you keep my teeth clean
I sing who is my creator
Not my mother
Not my father
But before the universe burst wide on open

If you find water, please call my name
Put me on like a fire, cover me in rain
If you find water, won't you call my name?
Put me on like a fire, cover me in rain

"SO MEAN TO ME"

LITTLE MILTON

 Tellin' everybody
All over town
When my money run out
You gonna put me down

You said you never loved me
You admit you're doing me wrong
You say you using me baby
'Til the real thing comes along

Have mercy, baby
Please, have mercy on me
Yes, something's bad gonna happen to you, darling
'Cause you so mean to me

I sometimes wonder
What's on your mind
How can one woman
Be so unkind

You treat me like the dirt
Down on the ground
I steal away to cry sometimes
But the tears just won't come down

Have mercy, baby

 Please, have mercy on me
Yes, something's bad gonna happen to you darling
'Cause you so mean to me

I walk the street at midnight
My heart full of pain
Why I love the woman
Lord knows I can't explain

She's a mean mistreater
A heartbreaker, too
Lightning ought to strike the woman
For treating me the way she do

Have mercy, baby
Please, have mercy on me
Yes, something's bad gonna happen to you darling
'Cause you so mean to me

So mean to me
So mean to me, baby
You never treat me right
You're so mean to me baby
You always want to fight
Live on, live on ...

"HEART OF GOLD"

LEYLA McCALLA

If I had a heart of gold
As some folks I know
I'd up and sell my heart of gold
And head north with the dough
But I don't have a heart of gold
My heart's not even lead
It's made of clay, old Georgia clay
And that's why my heart is red
I wonder why red clay
So red and Georgia sky, so blue
I wonder why it's yes to me
And yessir, sir to you
I wonder why the sky so blue
And why the clay so red
Way down south is always down
And never up instead

If I had a heart of gold

"VIETNAM"

LEYLA McCALLA

Vietnam, Vietnam,
Look for me, boys
'Cause here I come.

I am going away on a far off mission,
I'll be sailing on the deep blue seas,
I'll be back in the late late Spring,
And I hope you will be looking the same.

Vietnam, Vietnam,
Look for me, boys
'Cause here I come.

I don't have anything to offer you
But a maybe.

Not even a ring to put on your finger,
But if you wait, wait, wait for me.
I will return with an honorable discharge,
From the navy.
And I don't mean maybe.

Oh Lord, save me,
For my pretty baby.
Oh Lord, save me,
For my pretty baby.

Vietnam, Vietnam,
Look for me, boys
'Cause here I come.

Vietnam, Vietnam

 "LITTLE SPARROW"

LEYLA McCALLA

Wake up, wake up, little sparrow
Don't make your home out in the snow
Don't make your home out in the snow
Little bird, oh don't you know?
Your friends flew south many months ago
Your friends flew south many months ago
You're just a baby, you cannot fly
Your wings won't spread up against the sky
Your wings won't spread up against the sky
Wake up, wake up, little sparrow
Don't make your home out in the snow
Don't make your home out in the snow
Don't make your home out in the snow

"A DAY FOR THE HUNTER,

A DAY FOR THE PREY"

LEYLA McCALLA

If I go away,
I want you to pray.
Not for me,
For the souls who have gone away before.
If I am to stay,
I want you to pray.
Not for me,
For the souls who have stayed like me before.
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
If they take me away,
I want you to pray.
Not for me,
For the souls who have been taken like me before.
If I am to stay,
I want you to pray.
Not for me,
For the souls who have stayed like me before.
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey
A day for the hunter, a day for the prey

 "LITTLE MARGARET"

RHIANNON GIDDENS

Little Margaret, sitting in her high hall chair
Combing back her long, yellow hair
She saw sweet William and his new-made bride
Riding up the road so near

She threw down her ivory comb
Threw back her long yellow hair
Said, “I’ll go down and I’ll bid him farewell
“And I’ll nevermore go there”

It was late in the night
They were fast asleep
Little Margaret appeared all dressed in white
Standing at their bed-feet

Saying, “How do you like your snow-white pillow?”
“How do you like your sheet?”
Saying, “How do you like that pretty fair maid
“Who lays in your arms asleep?”

“Very well do I like my snow-white pillow
Well do I like my sheet

Much better do I like that pretty fair maid
Who stands at my bed-feet”

He called his serving man to go
And saddled the dappled roan
And he rode for her father’s house that night
Knocked on the door alone

Saying, “Is Little Margaret in her room
Or is she in the hall?”
“Little Margaret’s in her coal-black coffin
With her face turned toward the wall”

Unfold, unfold those snow-white robes
Be they ever so fine
For I want to kiss those cold, cold lips
For I know they’ll never kiss mine

Three times he kissed her cold, cold hand
Twice he kissed her cheek
But once he kissed her cold cold lips
Then he fell in her arms asleep

 "AE FOND KISS"

RHIANNON GIDDENS

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever
Ae farewell, and then forever
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee

Who shall say that Fortune grieves him
While the star of hope, she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me
Dark despair around benights me

I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy
Nothing could resist my Nancy:
But to see her was to love her
Love but her, and love for ever

Had we never lov'd sae kindly
Had we never lov'd sae blindly
Never met, or never parted
We'd had ne'er been broken-hearted

Fare-thee-well, thou first and fairest!
Fare-thee-well, thou best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure
Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure!

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae farewell alas, for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee

 "HEY BOY IN THE PINES"

DANNY FARRANT & PAUL RAWSON

Hey boy, hey boy
Don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shines
I shivered the whole night through
Hey boy, hey boy
Where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shine
I will shiver the whole night through
Hey boy, hey boy
Don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night

 "UNKNOWN"

EDWARD THOMAS

She is most fair,
And when they see her pass
The poets' ladies
Look no more in the glass
But after her.

On a bleak moor
Running under the moon
She lures a poet,
Once proud or happy, soon
Far from his door.

Beside a train,
Because they saw her go,
Or failed to see her,
Travellers and watchers know
Another pain.

The simple lack
Of her is more to me
Than others' presence,
Whether life splendid be
Or utter black.

I have not seen,
I have no news of her;
I can tell only
She is not here, but there
She might have been.

She is to be kissed
Only perhaps by me;
She may be seeking
Me and no other; she
May not exist.

"DON'T LEAVE ME NOW"

MICAH P. HINSON

Don't leave me now
I must confess
Haven't been the worst
Haven't been the best
Since you came

Don't take me now
I must confess
Found the world digress
And made it a home

Don't leave me now
I must confess
Haven't been the worst
Haven't been the best
Since you came

It's all the same
It's all the same

Don't take me now
I must confess
Found the world digress
And made it a home

It's all the same
It's all the same

"NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN"

THE MOODY BLUES

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVusUjyby18

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore
'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Gazing at people
Some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through
They can't understand
Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end
And I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Yes I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

 Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.

Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.

Along the coast you'll hear them boast
About a light they say that shines so clear.
So raise your glass, we'll drink a toast
To the little man who sells you thrills along the pier.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back firmly on the ground.
He flies so high, he swoops so low,
He knows exactly which way he's gonna go.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back on the ground.
He'll fly so high, he'll swoop so low.
Timothy Leary.

He'll fly his astral plane.
He'll take you trips around the bay.
He'll bring you back the same day.

 "ADLESTROP"

EDWARD THOMAS

Yes. I remember Adlestrop—
The name, because one afternoon
Of heat the express-train drew up there
Unwontedly. It was late June.

The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Was Adlestrop—only the name

And willows, willow-herb, and grass,
And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than the high cloudlets in the sky.

And for that minute a blackbird sang
Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds
Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

     "THE UNKNOWN BIRD"

EDWARD THOMAS

Three lovely notes he whistled, too soft to be heard
If others sang; but others never sang
In the great beech-wood all that May and June.
No one saw him: I alone could hear him
Though many listened. Was it but four years
Ago? or five? He never came again.

Oftenest when I heard him I was alone,
Nor could I ever make another hear.
La-la-la! he called, seeming far-off—
As if a cock crowed past the edge of the world,
As if the bird or I were in a dream.
Yet that he travelled through the trees and sometimes
Neared me, was plain, though somehow distant still
He sounded. All the proof is—I told men
What I had heard.

                                   I never knew a voice,
Man, beast, or bird, better than this. I told
The naturalists; but neither had they heard
Anything like the notes that did so haunt me,
I had them clear by heart and have them still.
Four years, or five, have made no difference. Then
As now that La-la-la! was bodiless sweet:
Sad more than joyful it was, if I must say
That it was one or other, but if sad
'Twas sad only with joy too, too far off
For me to taste it. But I cannot tell
If truly never anything but fair
The days were when he sang, as now they seem.
This surely I know, that I who listened then,
Happy sometimes, sometimes suffering
A heavy body and a heavy heart,
Now straightway, if I think of it, become
Light as that bird wandering beyond my shore.

 "I WISH I WERE A PROSTITUTE AGAIN"

THE MAGNETIC FIELDS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rGTYI-rjSM

He dressed up as a bunny
And licked my little foot
He gave me lots of money
To thrash his naughty butt
And sing when he was done
He dressed me up as King Tut

My life was much more funny
And more entertaining then
I wish I were a prostitute again

He paid me for my urine
He paid for my poo
Dressed like the Shroud of Turin
Costumed as Betty Boop
Or as Martin van Buren
Or in a hula hoop

I sold him life insurance
And I pocketed the pen
I wish I were a prostitute again

I got him his own collar
Custom-made, studded with jewels
I made him hoot and holler
With my very special tools
I am a classics scholar
Because he put me through schools

He had twelve million dollars
Until he gave me ten
I wish I were a prostitute again
I was too busy shopping
To cavort with other men
I wish I were a prostitute again

 "COME, LIFE, SHAKER LIFE!"

THE MAGNETIC FIELDS

When they're sure the men are gone
The women sing their favorite song
Our sound spins us around
There is no braying
Voices long ago drowned
Now sound again

Come, life, Shaker life!
Come, life eternal!
Shake shake out of me
All that is carnal
I'll take nimble steps
I'll be a David
I'll show Michael twice
How he behaved
Come, life, Shaker life!
Come, life eternal!
Shake shake out of me
All that is carnal

When they're sure the men are gone
The women sing their favorite song
Our sound spins us around
There is no braying
Voices long ago drowned
Now sound again

Come, life, Shaker life!
Come, life eternal!
Shake shake out of me
All that is carnal
I'll take nimble steps
I'll be a David
I'll show Michael twice
How he behav-ed
Come, life, Shaker life!
Come, life eternal!
Shake shake out of me
All that is carnal

 "SUNDOWNER"

KEVIN MORBY

Hey man, where'd you get your tan?
Oh, I'd like to have that sun in me
See I like the sun, but I start to run
Oh, the moment that the sun runs from me
I am a sundowner
So live and leave
I am a sundowner
Don't let the sun go down on me
Hey, ma, where'd you find pa?
Oh, I'd like to have some company
See, I like a crowd but I don't know how
To keep one surrounding me
I am a sundowner
So live and leave
I am a sundowner
Don't let the sun run from me
Oh, I went to the market
But the market was closed
Sign on the window said
The hours devour us
So, I went to the river
And it said, "Come here
Let me whisper in your ear"
And it pulled me under
So, I went to the Lord
But the Lord said, "No
You're not welcome here anymore"
So, I went to the sky
But the sky was closed
Said, "I don't know where I'm gonna go
I am a wandering soul
Through the back of what I know"
I am a sundowner
Please
Don't let the sun go down on me
Hey man, where'd you get your tan?
Oh, I'd like to have that sun in me
See I like the sun, but I start to run
Oh, the moment that the sun runs from me
I am a sundowner
Please
Don't let the sun go down on me

Don't go
Don't go, please
Stay here
Stay near me
My whole life, baby
I have been waiting
Don't go
Don't go, please
Stay here
Stay near me
Don't underestimate Midwest American sun
Try as you might but you will not outrun the burn
Say what you want and do what you will
Nothing will cover the faith that's been spilled
Don't underestimate Midwest American sun
I have fun with you
I have fun
I have fun with you
I have fun
I have fun with you
I have fun
And I hope you have fun with me, too
Say a prayer for me
My love outran me
My whole life, baby
Hmm, hmm
Don't run
Don't run so fast
Always, always end up last
God bless and pray for American daughters and sons
Try as they might to take flight with clipped wings but some won't
Do what they want and say what they will
Nothing will cover the faith that's been spilled
God bless and pray for American waters and sons
Don't outrun me
Please don't run
Please don't run from me
Please don't run
Please don't run from me
Please don't run
And I won't run from you

 "PROVISIONS"

KEVIN MORBY

There's a dead deer in the road up ahead
Must be an omen
From an hour ago or so
Must have been chosen
And the day moves fast, and the day moves slow
Don't I know it
And I never met a morning that I didn't like
And I never met a night that I wouldn't try twice
You should go before the dawn
Cast no shadows
But I'm already gone, mmm

And grab provisions
There's nothing for a hundred miles
And cast your vision on the dark road
For a while

Storm is coming now
It sits in a cloud
And soon the sky will open up its big mouth
I feel it in my bones
I feel so alone
My heart's the guitar, and my mouth the piano
I have many teeth in many different keys
Honey, if you're good then don't do it for free
Do what I have to do
Say what I have to say
Put a quarter in my jukebox then be on your way

And grab provisions
There's nothing for a hundred miles
And cast your vision on a memory
For a while

Puerto Rican bride with tears in her eyes on her wedding day
Oh, loves a parade, but don't just give it away, choose carefully
Confetti in my hand, are you ready to be a man
Are you inside the kingdom or just dead where you stand?
And the tin cans drum on the pavement
And somebody yells, "Someone save us"
You were a wishing well inside of hell
And I'd stand over you and I'd laugh as it fell
Wish you would come again, as lovers or friends
I don't care but till then

Grab provisions
There's nothing for a hundred miles
And cast your vision on a melody
For a while

Oh, sound off, one, two, three, four
Who's at the door?
And five, six, who is this?
And seven, eight, I'm feeling fine
And sound off, one, two
Three, four, get on the floor
And five, six, pick up sticks
And seven, eight, who's at the gate
Oh, and sound off, one, two
Three, four, who's at my door
And five, six, who is this?
And seven, eight

Grab provisions
There's nothing for a hundred miles
And cast your vision on the dark road
For a while

 Christabel, well, I love you
And my love will always be true
I won't forget just what you said
And I'll be there when your days are through

[?] on the road
None of them can share the load
I know your dreams are in the skies
You can't reach them, neither can I

And all the good friends that you keep
They can't help you because they don't know
Well I will love you, and I will care
And I'll be there when your days are through

Crystal nights and crystal moons
Gone away all too soon
Time on time in this endless game
But my love for you, it remains the same

[?] by the snowy night
Chased by wrong, pursuing right
All the men and the in-between
Love is known, but is it ever seen?

Christabel, well, I love you
And my love will always be true
I won't forget just what you said
And I'll be there when your days are through
